Salento Travel Guide 🇮🇹 Apulia’s Paradise in 5 Days

Did you know you can ski just a short distance from Venice? Join us on our epic weekend getaway from the bustling city (where Fabio comes from) to the breathtaking Alps. Cruising through the enchanting town of Bassano, we reached San Martino di Castrozza, perched at 1,487 meters in the Trentino region. Surrounded by stunning peaks, we found unexpected snow for skiing in late March, including the panoramic slopes of Mount Tognola at 2,200 meters.

Skiing Near Venice? The Italian Dolomites | Veneto Region Pt.1🇮🇹

Before Easter 2024 in Venice, we took a road trip to the stunning Dolomites. It was Ryan's first time seeing its beauty. After two nights in San Martino di Castrozza, where we saw sights like the Brenta River and Lago di Alleghe, we're now heading back to the plains. Our first stop is the impressive Sacrario Militare, offering breathtaking views from the Fascist era. Then, we explored the famous wine region of Treviso, including Valdobbiadene and Conegliano, and visited Canova's tomb, the celebrated sculptor. Despite a storm, we had a wine tasting at Ca'Salina Wineries and tried the unique wine vending machine at Osteria Senz'Oste. Join us on this unforgettable journey!

Should I Still Visit Venice in 2024? | Veneto Region Guide 🇮🇹

While in Milan, we were two days away from coming back to Germany at the end of October when the desire to go to south Italy overpowered our rational side. We found a gem on Airbnb in the old city of Agropoli and before we could finish our Aperitivos we were on a sleeper train. 

This is our month in Agropoli (and a bit of #napoli) sandwiched into a 9 minute video, which includes near dog attacks, a single day on the beach followed by flooding, multiple trips to the laundromat, mediocre wifi, lemon-stealing, and plenty of aperitivo to forget the rain. 

Even with all the rain during our month-stay, we grew to love the little town and the simple-life that came with it. 

Moral: Albeit beautiful and charming, try to stay in South Italy any month but November or you will be eternally damp.

The first time I truly appreciated Rome’s fountains was during a stroll through the cobblestone streets this time. Of course, there is the iconic Trevi Fountain, but I never imagined that the city is home to over 2000 fountains, each with its own history and charm.

Wandering through Rome, the sound of trickling water seemed to follow me everywhere. From the monumental fountains like Quattro Fiumi to the small drinking fountains known as nasoni, which have been hydrating Romans since the 1870s, I felt surrounded by centuries of history. These fountains aren’t just beautiful—they’re vital to the city’s daily life, always running and providing refreshment.

As I explored further, I learned that these fountains owe their existence to the ancient Roman aqueducts. These engineering marvels brought water from miles away into the city, supplying public baths, private villas, and the elaborate fountains that decorated Rome. The aqueducts fell into disrepair with the fall of the Roman Empire, but they were revived in the Renaissance, sparking a new era of fountain building.

One of my favorite discoveries was the nasoni, Rome’s unique drinking fountains with big nose-shaped spouts. They provide fresh, potable water—perfect for filling up your water bottle or taking a quick sip on a hot day. Not only are they a great way to stay hydrated, but they also connect you to the city’s rich history and traditions.

With every sip from a nasone or every glimpse of a grand fountain, I felt more connected to Rome’s past and present. It’s a city where history flows freely, just like the water from its always-running fountains.

Our morning started with prosecco (the best way to begin a Rome cooking class). We mixed, kneaded, and learned how to make authentic Roman-style dough…though I got scolded for being a little too aggressive with my mixing. Fabio stacked his toppings like a tower, I hovered hangrily by the oven with more wine, and we ended with tiramisu bliss.

The verdict? This was one of the better cooking classes in Rome we’ve ever done.

Pizza Showdown Italian vs Italian-American Taste Test! 🇮🇹

Since she speaks almost only Italian and Ryan has been studying the language, we decided to challenge ourselves by speaking Italian for the entire time she was with us.
We took Ivy to all the must-see places in Rome, from the iconic Colosseum and Vatican to the stunning Fontana di Trevi and more. As you can imagine, we had an absolute blast navigating Rome, struggling with the language, and sweating in the August heat! 🌞

How We Look for Photos During Rome Summer 🥵

Recipe below👇 Pasta Carbonara (Roman style but our own take)🐷🤌 (by Fabio).

Servings: 2

Ingredients: 250g Pasta (we used a whole wheat rigatoni - but spaghetti or rigatoni works well for this), Guanciale (you can use another type of bacon too, but this one is fatty and rich), 3 eggs, pecorino cheese

Step 1: Cut and fry the guanciale - when it is crunchy (and almost burnt), you know it’s done.

Step 2: Save the bacon fat and pour it into a little bowl, you will need it!

Step 3: Boil water, generously add salt to the water, add the pasta and cook it until al dente (10 mins for rigatoni)

Step 4: In the meantime, grate the pecorino cheese - use A LOT!

Step 5: When the bacon fat has cooled, crack the eggs into it and whisk with a fork until creamy.

Step 6: Drain the pasta at this point and save a little bit of pasta water.

Step 7: Mix everything together back in the pot. The eggs should cook a bit with the heat of the pasta, but if you like a less raw consistency…just turn the burner on and stir everything for about a minute.

Step 8: Dish it out and generously add pecorino to the top.

Ingredients for 8 People:
1 kg Mascarpone
8 tablespoons sugar
8 eggs
About 800 g ladyfinger biscuits (savoiardi)
Coffee, as needed
Unsweetened cocoa powder, as needed

Preparation:
Take the mascarpone out of the refrigerator half an hour before starting.
Separate the egg yolks and whites into two different bowls.
Add half of the sugar to the yolks and mix well with a whisk or electric mixer until light and fluffy.
Add the mascarpone to the yolk mixture and blend until smooth and creamy.
Whip the egg whites until they are semi-whipped. Gradually add the other half of the sugar and continue whipping until stiff peaks form.
Gently fold the egg white mixture into the yolk and mascarpone mixture, combining from bottom to top to maintain the fluffiness. Place the mixture in a piping bag and refrigerate.
Create the syrup for soaking the ladyfingers by mixing coffee and sugar.
Assemble the tiramisu: Spread a layer of cream in a baking dish, then add a layer of soaked ladyfingers. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used.
Refrigerate the dessert for at least two hours.
Before serving, sprinkle the top with sifted cocoa powder.
