We went up to Hokkaido (北海道) for the last leg of our Japan 🇯🇵 trip and were completely blown away. We have traveled a lot, so giving the title to Hokkaido as 'one of our favorite places in the world 🏆' was no easy endeavor, but it soon shot up to the top of the rankings. 

Watch as we explore Sapporo, as well as central Hokkaido (Furano, Biei, Mount Asahidake, etc.) using only public transportation 🚌 and….beach cruisers 🚲. Throughout the 5 day itinerary in Hokkaido we come across breath-taking nature, best karaoke friends, onsens galore, foot blisters, and...hokkaido cherry blossoms (which we were too late for in other parts of Japan). 

In conclusion: Hokkaido is pure bliss 😍.

Japan’s Northern Island — We Didn’t Expect This! Hokkaido 🇯🇵

Join as we make our way through the most southerly of the four largest islands in Japan, Kyushu (also known as 九州). In this video, we didn't just (not) visit abandoned islands or spend exorbitantly on accidental first class tickets, but we located the gates of hell (or less dramatically, we found what is known the "hells" in Kyushu).

Top 10 Must-See in Tokyo: Our Favorite Spots in Tokyo 🇯🇵

We managed to get our hands on the 7-day Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) before it goes through a massive price increase later this year (source: https://bit.ly/3okMPiz), and we definitely took advantage of it…cutting off a huge amount of expenses and time by allowing us to ride the shinkansens (Japan's super ridiculously fast and efficient bullet trains 🚄) across Honshu island. Without it, we wouldn't have managed to sleep in a karaoke room in Hiroshima, get vertigo in one of Osaka's weirdest towers, and become best friends with ravenously hungry deer in Nara. Japan's Top 5 Innovations That You Need 🇯🇵 (Game Show 🎰)

When we first started traveling in Japan as an LGBTQ+ couple, the thing that struck me most was the feeling of safety. Whether we were exploring Tokyo’s vibrant gay bars or wandering through quiet mountain towns, the atmosphere was always welcoming. Japan has this incredible balance: in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, you can find bustling nightlife and gay parties that rival those in the West, but as soon as you venture into the countryside, you’re met with serene landscapes and a culture so deeply rooted in hospitality that it feels almost otherworldly.

One of the highlights of our journey was participating in Tokyo Rainbow Pride. Unlike the massive parades you might see in New York or São Paulo, this felt uniquely Japanese. It was vibrant and celebratory but also deeply respectful and inclusive. Walking through the streets, surrounded by people waving rainbow flags and wearing colorful yukatas, it was clear that Pride here isn’t just about a single community—it’s a reflection of Japan’s quiet but powerful way of embracing diversity.

Beyond the cities, our adventures took us off the beaten path. I remember stepping into a tiny ryokan in the mountains, where the elderly owners welcomed us like family. We soaked in an onsen under the stars and marveled at how different this experience was from the big cities—and yet, the feeling of safety and acceptance never wavered.

Japan is a place where contrasts coexist beautifully, and as an LGBTQ+ traveler, it’s a destination that not only accepts but celebrates you in its own quiet, powerful way.

STOP Visiting Tokyo and Kyoto, Try These Instead!

This is the second part of our 7-day Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) experience (You can find the first part here 👉 https://youtu.be/ClhQy_5udKA). From Nara we headed to Kyoto where Ryan got particularly pissed off at all of the crowds, but managed to find some solitude and peace. From there, we headed up to the lesser-known Kanazawa, where we got an up close in personal look at Pokemon and ate some of the cheapest seafood of our lives 🐟. 

This was all before we realized the JR Pass screwed us over (or did we misread the fine print?) and we had to get down to Tokyo as fast as humanly possible!

Japan Rail Pass: Is It ACTUALLY Worth It? (Honshu Vlog 🇯🇵) | Pt. 2

What could be better than merging kitties and coffee (or matcha lattes 🍵)?!

Ryan thought that this concept was weird and was apprehensive to visit, but as soon as he entered Cat Cafe Mocha in Shinjuku and saw the little kitties jumping around (and the place didn’t smell like cat pee), he was sold. 

A cafe and co-working space, Cat Cafe Mocha is a cat-lover’s dream. It is a bit expensive (you pay for every ten minutes you are there), but the costs max out after a certain point and unlimited matcha lattes, coffees, and teas are part of the package. 

The best part was watching the very synchronized and coordinated cat feeding in the evening.

Exploring Osaka with a JR Pass | Japan Travel Vlog 🇯🇵

Without even knowing until a day before, we ended up in Tokyo for Tokyo Rainbow Pride in April 2023 🗼🏳️‍🌈. What seemed like a small affair at first, soon turned into something far beyond our expectations, filled with parading, plenty of Japanese beer, and lots more randomness. In turn, it ended up being a pretty magical event, and was so beautiful to see a country like Japan 🇯🇵 heading in what seems like the right direction in regards to lgbtq+ rights.
