This means that on every first Sunday of each month, more than 30 major state and civic museums, archaeological parks, and historic sites in Rome offer free admission to all visitors

This year in August, we did:
- Castel Sant’Angelo (usually €18)
- Capitoline Museums (usually €20.50)
- Pantheon (usually €7)

That is €45.5 euros per person that can instead be spent on carbonara, aperitivi, and gelato after your busy, busy day 😏.

Last year, we did:
- Colosseum
- Roman Forum
- Palatine Hill
- The National Museum of Palazzo Venezia
- The Vittoriano Complex

There will be crowds… and in the summer, there will be heat… but it is a small price to pay for a free day around Rome.

Rome for FREE: The First Sunday Secret You Need to Know

Our favorite area outside of Rome has quickly become Castelli Romani. There is something just so dreamy about these towns, the landscapes, and their rich cultures.

Last year we did Castel Gandolfo 🌋 and Ariccia 🐷 (see linked reel)

This year was 🍷 Frascati

How to get there:
When we went, there was some train work, so we took a bus from Anagnina metro station (A) but you can also take a train from Roma Termini to Stazione Frascati which takes about 30 mins.

Things to do in Frascati:
- See the villas. The town is famous for its villas, which were built during the Renaissance for rich Roman families. Some are closed for events, but they are amazing to watch from the outside.
- Check out 📍Museo Tuscolano Scuderie Aldobrandini, with tons of Roman artifacts and an exhibition about the villas (you might also be the only visitor).
- Wander the town.
- Urban exploring - they have a massive, non-functioning fountain in the public park, that must have been beautiful in its heyday. You can head to the top of the hill behind it and enter from above.
- Drink Frascati wine - the town is famous for Frascati DOC, an ancient white wine made here for over 2,000 years. People often call it the “Golden Wine of the Romans”…. 📍Cantina da Santino is a simple little wine shop where you can bring your own snacks… let them focus on the wine.
- Eat porchetta - Porchetta is from nearby Ariccia, but you’ll still find plenty of it. We had porchetta sandwiches at this amazing little place 📍La Porchetta all’ombrellino (paired with Frascati wine, of course).

We rented our mountain bike (you’ll need it for the old roads) from @ecobikeroma for €5 per hour (there are also e-bikes, but we went with the old-fashioned ones), got a map, and were on our way down a 2,000+ year old road.

There’s lots to see along the way and the further you get from the bike rental shop, the less crowds you’ll experience, which are already small to begin with.

You’ll find a restaurant or two along the way, so don’t worry about food.

Our morning started with prosecco (the best way to begin a Rome cooking class). We mixed, kneaded, and learned how to make authentic Roman-style dough…though I got scolded for being a little too aggressive with my mixing. Fabio stacked his toppings like a tower, I hovered hangrily by the oven with more wine, and we ended with tiramisu bliss.

We Tried Speaking ONLY Italian for 24 Hours in Rome 🇮🇹

The first time I truly appreciated Rome’s fountains was during a stroll through the cobblestone streets this time. Of course, there is the iconic Trevi Fountain, but I never imagined that the city is home to over 2000 fountains, each with its own history and charm.

Wandering through Rome, the sound of trickling water seemed to follow me everywhere. From the monumental fountains like Quattro Fiumi to the small drinking fountains known as nasoni, which have been hydrating Romans since the 1870s, I felt surrounded by centuries of history. These fountains aren’t just beautiful—they’re vital to the city’s daily life, always running and providing refreshment.

As I explored further, I learned that these fountains owe their existence to the ancient Roman aqueducts. These engineering marvels brought water from miles away into the city, supplying public baths, private villas, and the elaborate fountains that decorated Rome. The aqueducts fell into disrepair with the fall of the Roman Empire, but they were revived in the Renaissance, sparking a new era of fountain building.

One of my favorite discoveries was the nasoni, Rome’s unique drinking fountains with big nose-shaped spouts. They provide fresh, potable water—perfect for filling up your water bottle or taking a quick sip on a hot day. Not only are they a great way to stay hydrated, but they also connect you to the city’s rich history and traditions.

With every sip from a nasone or every glimpse of a grand fountain, I felt more connected to Rome’s past and present. It’s a city where history flows freely, just like the water from its always-running fountains.

The Nasone Fountains in Rome #RomanHistory #TravelVlog #RomeItaly

Recipe below👇 Pasta Carbonara (Roman style but our own take)🐷🤌 (by Fabio).

Servings: 2

Ingredients: 250g Pasta (we used a whole wheat rigatoni - but spaghetti or rigatoni works well for this), Guanciale (you can use another type of bacon too, but this one is fatty and rich), 3 eggs, pecorino cheese

Step 1: Cut and fry the guanciale - when it is crunchy (and almost burnt), you know it’s done.

Step 2: Save the bacon fat and pour it into a little bowl, you will need it!

Step 3: Boil water, generously add salt to the water, add the pasta and cook it until al dente (10 mins for rigatoni)

Step 4: In the meantime, grate the pecorino cheese - use A LOT!

Step 5: When the bacon fat has cooled, crack the eggs into it and whisk with a fork until creamy.

Step 6: Drain the pasta at this point and save a little bit of pasta water.

Step 7: Mix everything together back in the pot. The eggs should cook a bit with the heat of the pasta, but if you like a less raw consistency…just turn the burner on and stir everything for about a minute.

Step 8: Dish it out and generously add pecorino to the top.
