Our Italy Test: Venice, the Train, and Rome

Short version: aloSIM delivered strong 5G in Venice and Rome, held up through rural Tuscany on the train, and worked underground on the Rome metro where Airalo previously failed us.

Longer version: it was a real trip, not a lab test. Fabio and I visiting Venice (his hometown), then both of us taking the Frecciarossa south to Rome. Venice

He checked signal in several spots around the city: on foot through Cannaregio, on the vaporetto crossing the Grand Canal, sitting at a café off Campo Santa Margherita, and even on a little day trip we did to colorful Burano. 5G most of the time with no drops. Even on the water, where other eSIMs we've tested in the past tend to wobble, it held up clean.

The Train South to Rome

Italy's high-speed rail is excellent, but the route from Venice to Rome passes through some genuinely rural stretches through Tuscany and Umbria. Signal drops are common here regardless of provider. It's landscape, not your eSIM.

The aloSIM performed well. We had 5G for most of the journey, LTE in the rural middle sections, and one brief dropout through a tunnel... normal behavior for any mobile plan in that corridor. What stood out was how fast it recovered. No prolonged dead zones.

Rome

Two specific moments worth flagging.

First: the Rome metro. Lines A and B are notoriously bad for signal. We tested aloSIM on line A between Termini and Spagna during peak morning hours. Data worked throughout. Not blazingly fast, but consistently usable for Maps, messaging, and pulling up a restaurant booking. That's more than we got from Airalo on an earlier Rome trip, where connectivity was spotty once underground.

Second: above ground across the city. Trastevere, the Colosseum area, Piazza Navona, the Vatican neighborhood. 5G consistently. Streaming, navigation, posting content, and hotspotting a laptop for about an hour to catch up on some work. Zero issues.

A few honest notes on each competitor:

Airalo has the biggest brand in the eSIM space and the marketing budget to match. The product doesn't always live up to the name recognition, though. When we were in Armenia, our Airalo eSIM didn't connect at all. Zero service, no meaningful support, and no refund. We've had fine experiences in Western Europe with it, including an earlier Italy trip, but the pricing is no longer competitive... especially once you factor in our code for aloSIM.

Holafly is genuinely useful if you need a flexible plan length, since they offer more granular day options than most providers. But the hotspot cap at 1 GB per day is a real limitation if you're working remotely or need to tether a laptop for more than casual use.
