The Fabryk

In Colonia Americana (Guadalajara), Mexico doesn’t look like what you would expect.

This neighborhood was built in the late 1800s, when Guadalajara was expanding and influenced by Europe. That’s why you see Art Deco, neoclassical mansions, and details that feel more Paris than Mexico.

Today, it’s one of the coolest areas in the world (yeppp, in 2022 Time Out gave it the title as the Coolest Neighborhood in the World to Visit), full of cafés, galleries, nightlife, and creative spaces.

At the same time, like many “cool” neighborhoods, its popularity has brought rising prices and visible gentrification, which has changed who can afford to live here and sparked ongoing conversations locally… the name ‘Colonia Americana’ says it all as there was a significant presence of foreign investors and residents particularly from the US when it was being built.

However, there is no doubt, it’s super aesthetic and walkable.

The "Coolest Neighborhood in the World" is in Mexico 🇲🇽

Our favorite day of the week in Guadalajara is Sunday.

Thanks to @viarecreactivagdl, over 60 km of streets are shut down so people can bike, run, and actually take over the city. Every week felt like we were running a marathon, cruising down the middle of big avenues usually filled with cars (even if we only made it about 4k each time in the heat).

But it’s more than just exercise. On Sundays, life spills into the streets. Masseuses offering quick treatments, food stands everywhere, people relaxing in plazas, traditional dancing… it turns into one big shared space to meet, hang out, and enjoy the weekend.

…Is that it is near a Torta Ahogada stand
Ahogada = Drowned
And rightfully so, as it is basically a carnitas sandwich DROWNED in one or two types of sauces.
It is a pride and joy of Guadalajara and has been around since the 1800s when the French invaded, tried to bake French bread, failed without yeast, but started making sourdough bread that is perfect in Guadalajara’s climate. For that reason, the bread is drown-able, since it isn’t that normal yeast-heavy bread.
It’s filled with carnitas, onions, and more… delicious and absolutely messy as hell, but just go with it… there is literally no way to eat these gracefully.

1) Use Ticketmaster* (search ‘Lucha Libre Guadalajara’) and pick the Tuesday you want to attend
2) Choose between the Ring area (more expensive tickets and closer) or the Balcon/Gradas area (cheaper tickets but further away)
3) Either way, you will soon be in an absolute war zone, of theatrical yelling and fighting, so have fun
*It’s actually cheaper to get Lucha Libre tickets right at the venue, but you have to pay with cash and if it is a super crowded night, they might not have the exact seats you want.

We didn’t come to Guadalajara to visit. We came to live.
After Christmas in California and a quick stop in Las Vegas for CES, we found a cheap flight and followed a friend’s advice. That’s how our Mexico journey started.
And it led us here.
For 8 weeks, we built a routine, explored neighborhoods, tried (a lot of) tacos, and experienced daily life in one of Latin America’s most underrated cities.
Especially in Colonia Americana, recently named one of the coolest and most livable neighborhoods in the world by Time Out.
Guadalajara surprised us.
It’s creative, walkable, very gay-friendly, and easy to live in… but also complex, with moments that remind you this is real life, not just travel.

We naively thought this day would be all about learning how tequila is made… with maybe a polite little tasting on the side. Turns out, this tour had very different plans 😅🫣
