I Didn't Expect Albania to Be Like This 🇦🇱 (Tirana Vlog)

Albania used to be a brutal communist dictatorship. Think North Korea level isolation without nuclear weapons. With communism comes a lot of bleak buildings.

But if you wander around Tirana these days, the place has absolutely transformed - to the point where it reminded me of exponential growth in cities like Shanghai.

First of all, the communist blocks are still there, but plenty of them are splashed in colors. This is thanks to then mayor, now Prime Minister and artist, Edi Rama who back in 2000 decided to enliven the greyness of the city by painting the communist monstrosities in vibrant shades and murals. In doing this, more people spent time outdoors.

Instead of knocking down communist buildings like the horrific Pyramid of Tirana, they city has made it into a multi-functional public space that you can even climb.

Currently in a new stage of growth, Tirana is building some of the world’s most unique and colourful skyscrapers including this one with a topographical map of Albania imprinted on the side and a building literally in the shape of Albanian hero, Skanderbeg’s head.

Is this progress or erasure of a country’s brutal past? Either way it makes Tirana currently one of the most exciting places to visit.

Is This the Most Underrated City in Europe?! 🇦🇱

Let me sum up Tirana, Albania in a few thoughts: dodgy yet gaudy suburban hotels, artificial lakes, terrifying brutalist pyramids, itchy balls, succulent desserts, and me leaving with less of an understanding of Tirana than before coming. If you want your Tirana experience to be normal and educational, don't watch this video.
