How do you eat Michelin-approved food without emptying your wallet? 

We did…so we made it our mission to hunt down Penang’s best Michelin Bib Gourmand spots. 

The Bib Gourmand award recognizes restaurants serving high-quality food at reasonable prices, making it perfect for foodies like us who love great meals but also need to afford our next hotel for the night.

In Penang, we slurped up legendary assam laksa at Penang Road Famous Laksa…tangy, spicy, and totally life-changing. Then, we devoured delicate nyonya kuih at Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay (featured in this video), because we take dessert just as seriously as our main courses.

We love how these places give Michelin-worthy flavors without the white tablecloths and jaw-dropping bills.

What is a Kopitiam and how will it change your life?!

‘Kopi’ is Indonesian and Malay for ‘Coffee’ and ‘Tiam’ is Hakka Chinese for ‘Shop’. So this totally exotic word actually just means ‘Coffee Shop’.

But these ‘Coffee Shops’ that are spread around Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, and Southern Thailand were put into this world to help redefine what breakfast is. 

Who says that breakfast has to be limited to eggs, pancakes, and cereal. In a Kopitiam, savory (and spicy) rules and you’ll soon be indulging in, for example:

🍚 Nasi Lemak: Made by cooking rice in coconut milk and pandan leaves, and is commonly served with a spicy sambal, eggs, anchovies, and cucumber slices. The name translates to "fatty rice" in Malay.

🍝 Char Kuey Teow: A stir-fried dish of flat rice noodles, eggs, bean sprouts, and other ingredients in a flavorful sauce. The name translates to “stir-fried flat rice noodles” in Hakka. 

And don’t even get us started on the coffee and tea options.
