We love Malaysia, so much so that we stayed over 2 months traversing the varied landscapes, eating everything, and connecting with the community. But for LGBTQ+ travelers, the experience is layered and totally not black and white.

First things first, as an LGBTQ+ traveler, should you go?! YES. The culture is beautiful, the unique experiences are endless, and the Malaysian queer community needs our support more than ever.
But here’s what you should know and keep in mind when planning:
🚨 Laws & Risks:
🔹 Sharia Law (for Muslims): Same-sex acts are criminalized, punishable by fines, imprisonment, and even caning.
🔹 Secular Laws (for everyone): Colonial-era laws still criminalize same-sex relations 🙃, though enforcement is inconsistent.
🔹 Public Affection? Avoid. Even for straight couples, PDA is frowned upon. Save it for the hotel!
🔹 Dating Apps? Be cautious. Reports of entrapment cases exist albeit super, super rare. If there is a blank profile, block block block.
🔹 LGBTQ+ Spaces? They exist….but remain discreet and not so out in the open. There have been cases of saunas being raided, but again it’s a rarity.
💡 Tips for Staying Safe:
✅ Head to queer-friendly cities like Kuala Lumpur and Penang, where venues are more plentiful and mindsets are open
✅ Research local laws before traveling: they are not uniform in every state
✅ If using dating apps, be cautious about meeting new people (meet in public).
✅ Connect with local LGBTQ+ communities privately for insights (plenty of them on Instagram).

We stayed in Kuala Lumpur for a month and having booked the apartment just a few days before arriving, we were pleasantly surprised with our €650 (€325 per person) investment, which included a fabulous gym, infinity pool, and sauna. We got the most basic of rooms (the Basic Studio), but the complex offers everything up to a three-room apartment.
Of course, if we had planned a bit better and earlier, we know there are even bigger options out there for cheaper!

There’s a genius invention we’re OBSESSED with: karaoke booths! 🎶 (The perfect little gay day spot)

You rent a cozy little booth by the hour, find your fave song on a touchscreen, and then the magic begins. A music video plays—sometimes the real one, sometimes a wild 90s Baywatch-esque masterpiece—and you sing your heart out. 🎵💖

The kicker? It’s so cheap! We paid 21 Malaysian Ringgit (€4.50/hour), and it included free drinks AND ice cream (though we passed on the yam flavor… vanilla FTW).

Therapy in a box? Yes. World peace through karaoke? Definitely.
