The technology is incredible. Life is unbelievably convenient. Everything moves fast.
But sometimes it also feels… a little isolating.
You order coffee through WeChat and never even see the barista.
Meals are ordered through QR codes without speaking to a waiter.
Even taxis are starting to drive themselves.
At restaurants you often see people eating alone, quietly scrolling on their phones. Maybe their soulmate is right around them, but they’ll never know as interaction touch points are becoming less and less.
China is probably further ahead than almost anywhere in the world when it comes to tech and efficiency. And honestly… we loved experiencing it.
But it also made us wonder what gets lost when convenience replaces small human interactions.

A Drone Delivered Our Tea in China 😳

In Shenzhen, we had our first self-driving car (driverless car) experience (with @ponyai_tech) and strangely...it was very anti-climatic. In a way, it felt natural immediately.

For our last stop in China (this time), we head to Shenzhen… a city that genuinely feels like it’s living in the future.
Just a few decades ago, this was a small fishing village. Today, it’s one of the world’s fastest-growing tech hubs, often compared to Silicon Valley. And after spending a few days here, we can kind of see why.
In this video, we put Shenzhen’s futuristic reputation to the test:

For one day, we bought everything through Meituan… coffee, food, even a gym pass.
By the end of the day we had saved almost €40.
The crazy part? Almost no foreign travelers seem to be using it, even though it’s one of the most powerful apps in China.
It’s basically China’s version of Groupon… but built into daily life. Restaurants, cafés, gyms, spas, attractions. Locals use it constantly to get discounts.
The problem is that figuring out how to use it as a foreigner is… not exactly obvious.
So we made a step-by-step guide showing:

• and how to redeem them in person

How to Use Meituan as a Foreigner in China

This road shouldn’t exist… but it does.

In this video, we’re crossing from Macau to Hong Kong over the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, the longest sea crossing in the world at 55 km.

It took 9 years to build, cost ¥127 billion (nearly 16 billion euro), and cuts the journey by road from around 4 hours to about 30–45 minutes.

Part bridge.
Part undersea tunnel.
Built on artificial islands in the middle of the Pearl River Delta.

It links Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China, three cities with different legal and economic systems, under one country.

Some see it as an engineering masterpiece.
Others see political symbolism.

Either way, it reshaped the region.

1. Go to a foreign country
2. Go to a supermarket
3. Buy loads of snacks…even better if you don’t understand anything
4. Put them all in a bag
5. Find a cozy room (ideally not like our seedy hotel room a month later in Vegas)
6. Pull out each snack one by one
7. Taste it
8. Rate it
9. Repeat Steps 6 to 9 until all the snacks are gone
China has the best snacks to play this with, and there are stores specifically devoted to snackers with basically just hundreds of different types of snackity snacks in it. Of course there are many delish things, but we wanted to go for the odd ones this time around.

The Most Chaotic Way to Try Foreign Snacks 🇨🇳

We were in Shenzhen and our normal day would’ve cost us around €40 each.
Coffee. Lunch. Gym. Cheeky desserts.
Instead?
We paid about €10 each using Meituan discounts.
Here’s how foreigners can actually use it:
1. Get a Chinese phone number
Ideally at the airport. eSIMs usually won’t work for this.
2. Download Meituan (美团) or Dianping (大众点评)
Same ecosystem. If you don’t read Chinese, open it through the Meituan mini-program inside WeChat so you can translate directly in the app (prepare for some UI shifts hehe, but it works)
3. Find the deals you want
Look for bundles, discounts, and group deals.
4. Pay with WeChat Pay
5. Go to the vendor and claim your deal
They’ll scan your code and you’re done.
It’s not always intuitive.
You will press the wrong button at least once.
But once you figure it out, it changes the game.
China basically runs on apps and this is one of the big ones.

Inside WeChat, mini-programs like Meituan let you find food/drink deals and even book tourist activities without needing separate apps. Little secret: you can even book trains cheaper than Trip.com through the mini-program in the payments section!
✨ Alipay
Same idea as WeChat for payments, but honestly smoother and faster. Alipay also has mini-programs inside…like Didi for taxis and travel bookings. No extra apps needed, it’s all built-in.
✨ AMaps
Forget Google Maps…it barely works. AMaps gives you real-time traffic, directions, and hotspots (way more accurate!). It’s mostly in Chinese but super intuitive once you get used to it. Alternative: Baidu Maps.
✨ Baidu 
TranslateNeed to order food, read a sign, or avoid accidentally ordering jellyfish? 😂 Baidu Translate is the way to go. Google Translate works too, but Baidu feels way more natural for casual convos and slang.
