You realize over 10% of the surrounding people identify as LGBTQ+, a figure that rivals San Francisco and is nearly double Germany's national average. You stop being surprised by rainbow flags hanging from apartment windows in November, not just June.

Cologne isn't just Germany's gay capital. It's one of the most queer cities in Europe, with a scene that runs from legendary after-parties at Nachtflug to drag shows at Star-Treff Cabaret to Kölsch-fueled evenings on Schaafenstraße. The locals might keep their own PDA private (old habits), but they'll smile when you don't.

I called it home for six years and here is everything I know.

Oh honey, it's not just friendly... it's practically throwing a parade for you! Cologne isn't just Germany's gay capital; it's giving major European cities a run for their money. We're talking London levels of acceptance here, folks.

Public displays of affection? Go for it! Holding hands, smooching your sweetie... it's all good in the Cologne hood. The city's got a rep for being so chill about LGBTQ+ folks that you might forget you're special (but don't worry, you still are 😉).

The Best Cologne Gayborhoods

Let's say the center of Cologne is a big gay neighborhood. It is probably still one of the most densely populated city with gays in Europe.

For accommodation, the ideal spot in Cologne is the Heumarkt area. Here, you'll find a nice atmosphere with numerous festivals like Pride, Carnival, Saint Nicholas and the Wine Fest. Additionally, there are gay cruising bars such as Pullermans, catering to a more mature clientele.

Another excellent option is around Rudolfplatz, where Schaafenstrasse, the gay street, is located.

Alternatively, Ehrenfeld offers a hip vibe with plenty of restaurants and clubs, attracting a mixed crowd akin to the Kreuzberg of Cologne. I lived in Ehrenfeld for quite a few years and it became more and more gay-friendly as the years went on.

Südstadt is also well-connected and convenient, especially for accessing Heumarkt, the historical center. While there aren't many gay bars in Südstadt, it's a tolerant area.

Gay Festivals in Cologne

Cologne Pride

Cologne Pride (officially Christopher Street Day, or CSD Köln) is one of Germany's largest Pride events, drawing over 1 million visitors annually. It encompasses the entire area of Heumarkt and the gay streets of Schaafenstraße, with a parade of over 100 trucks and floats, performances, and cultural events spread across multiple days. Additionally, Phantasialand, the amusement park close to Cologne, hosts a one-day Pride fest called Phantasialand Pride.

Personally, I've attended Cologne Pride 5 times and have marched in the parade and been in floats. I can easily say it is one of my favorite prides in the world.

Cologne Carnival

Cologne Carnival Referred to as the “fifth season,” Cologne Carnival is one of Germany’s most inclusive and LGBTQ-friendly celebrations. A highlight of the festivities is the Rosa Sitzung, showcasing parties, drag queens, satire, and flamboyant performances that have become a beloved carnival tradition. Believe me, the entire city partakes!

St. Nicholas Festival and Christmas Market

St. Nicholas Festival and weihnachtmarkten is the best gay way to spend Christmas time, featuring festive parties (SNF festival by World of Sexy) and the renowned Gay Christmas Market, known as Heavenue. This market offers a unique and inclusive space for revelers to enjoy the holiday spirit. There are also going to be plenty of other Christmas markets around Cologne during this time.

Cologne Fetish Pride

Cologne Fetish Pride, hosted in May, is highlighted by the Fetish Party Boat, which sets sail during various festivals, providing a one-of-a-kind experience on the river. The crowd usually reunites every night at the iron bar (opposite to the now closed kinkz)

Bear Pride

Bear Pride🐻, held at the end of November, just before the St. Nicholas Festival, is a celebration of bear culture and community.

Other Gay events

• Puppy Pride, catering to the puppy play community.

• Gayoween, a Halloween event which people take very seriously. Don't make my same mistake and go there basically without a full costume.

• Weinwoche and Weinfest Am Rhein are not really gay, but gays love to drink and this one attracts many of them. It features wines from all over the Rhine area. Ryan and I had one of our first dates in Cologne here!🥰

The main gay nightlife is centered around Schaafenstraße (also known as cologne Bermuda triangle/köln Bermuda Dreieck) and Heumarkt (including Pipinstraße)... areas where you can bar-hop easily because everything is side by side.

Top Gay Parties & Clubs in Cologne

Cologne's gay club scene runs deeper than most cities its size. Between the regular monthly parties, festival-specific events during Pride and Carnival, and underground techno nights in Ehrenfeld, there's always something on. Here are the gay parties in Cologne worth knowing about.

• Sexy, Guyz and Play: Techno and circuit music. They also organize festivals during Pride, Carnival, and St. Nicholas Festival.
• Homoriental: Popular within the Arab community, Homoriental hosts a club event every fourth Saturday of the month, historically at Rich Club Cologne.
• Backstage Diaries and Other parties at Art Theater: Situated in Ehrenfeld, Backstage Diaries is a gay-friendly venue offering a mixed yet welcoming crowd. With a beer garden and three rooms featuring different music genres... pop in the bar, alternative and revival in the main area, and techno in the basement—it provides an inclusive space for diverse party experiences. On a monthly basis!
• Xtreme: Held at Essigfabrik, Xtreme offers a techno-kinky party experience. Xtnd serves as the official after-hour of Xtreme, providing further party opportunities.
• Odonien: Open-air cultural space and studio in Ehrenfeld with a Berlin-style crowd. One of the best venues in Cologne for outdoor gay events in summer. This is one of our favorites.
• Shrotty: Techno club in Bickendorf, Ehrenfeld... Mixed crowd and friendly. A little off-the-beaten-track, but well worth it if you are a techno fan.
• MS RheinHarmonie: Gay cruise parties on the Rhine are back. Check the Fetish Pride schedule for sailing dates.
• Gloria Theater: Seasonal gay events in a historic venue near the city center.
• Kitkat Cologne: The famous Berlin party occasionally makes appearances in Cologne, hosting events at Bootshaus or Bohème Sauvage Colonia.
• Coco Schmitz Metzgerei/Bar: primarily used for private or small parties. They host gay parties like The Shize or Pop icon showdowns. I attended Britney vs. Kylie and was all about the music of these pop icons. Check the program!

Gay Cruising & Saunas

Cruising Spots

• Pullermans: Heumarkt area. Mixed crowd, discreet visitors welcome.
• Deck 5: Cruising bar near Heumarkt.
• Aachener Weiher Forest: Popular cruising spot near the center. We have been here in the late afternoon and have definitely witnessed some action, but after 10 pm is when it really starts.
• Agrippabad: Not officially gay, but known for male cruising.
• Herculesberg: Used to be cruisy, now less popular.

Gay Saunas

• Phoenix Sauna: The best in Cologne and by far my favorite. Garden balcony, events including B-Low party. Wednesdays: 2-for-1. Mondays: "Secrets" (all genders welcome). Best day to go is on Sunday afternoon in the colder months.
• Badehaus Babylon: Stunning ambiance, more mature crowd. Annual incredible Babylon Pool Party during Pride.
• Vulcanus: Bar and sauna combo.

Beyond Cologne: Pluto Sauna in Essen is highly recommended.

Shopping in Cologne offers a diverse array of options. The primary shopping street in Cologne is Schildergasse, where you'll find all the brands you desire. However, it tends to get overwhelmingly crowded, especially towards the weekend, which may not be our scene. The Rhein-Center is a large shopping mall, although it's situated a bit further from the city center. If you're looking for design items, these can be found in the Belgian district. Now, let's focus more on the gay shops:

• MGV Cologne: Located near the Phoenix Sauna, this shop offers a good selection of items.
• Best of Fetish Cologne: A newer and spacious shop situated on the gay street.
• Bruno's: A shop belonging to the notable Bruno's chain.

Other Gay Activities & Hangouts

• Anyway: Queer association with various events.
• Cafe Rico and St.Louis: Two places popular for breakfast, especially on weekends.
• Fantasy pride at Phantasialand One day of pride in the famous theme park in Brühl (Suspended)
• Blumen und pflanzenmarkt Holländer Köln: Believe it or not, this flower store hosts parties with drag shows occasionally. How cute!🌸
• Rheinpromenade Köln-Deutz: Chill and get nice shots of the city when the weather is good.

Best Time to Visit

• Fly into Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) or Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) – DUS has more long-haul flights, then a 30-minute train to Cologne.
• Train: Köln Hauptbahnhof is a major European hub.
• Bus: FlixBus works well.

Getting Around

• Public transport: Trams, buses, S-Bahn. Get the KVB app. Validate your ticket before boarding.
• Bikes & scooters: Voi, Lime, Bolt, KVB-Rad (Nextbike) and Swapfiets.

Money & Tipping

• Currency: Euro (€). ATMs everywhere.
• Tipping: Round up to the nearest even number or leave 5-10%.
• Cash is king: Germany is still very cash-dependent. Always have euros on you.
