Best Gay Hotels in Zipolite, Mexico: Our Top 10

Maybe you've already read our Gay Zipolite Guide, so you might now be a little familiar with the rhythm, the sunsets at Playa del Amor, the drag shows at La Máxima, the afternoon pool parties.

But where do you actually sleep?

We spent nearly three weeks in Zipolite. Not in one of the big northern resorts, but at Sebastián de los Milagros, a gay-owned beachfront hotel right on the sand (as well as our little casita in the woods for a few weeks). We lived like locals, but we also walked past every hotel on this list and also spoke to many of the owners in person or online to curate this post. We also drank at their bars, did yoga on their premises, or even crashed their pool parties (which is a pretty normal thing to do, don't worry).

So this guide isn't based on quick press trips or sponsored stays. It's based on really being there.

Zipolite has over 10 gay-friendly hotels spanning every budget and nudity preference, from queer-owned beachfront spots to mandatory-nudist pools and secluded luxury villas. Let me help you find your home base.

Map: Where the Hotels Are in Zipolite

Quick geography of Zipolite:

  • North side (cliffs & resorts): Quieter, more upscale, stunning ocean views. El Alquimista, Naked, Villa Aikia.
  • South side (from Budamar to the end): Wilder, more "real," a bit rawer, and cheaper. Closer to Playa del Amor. San Sebastián de Milagros, Men Zipolite.
  • Central: Convenient, near restaurants and the main beach access.
  • A note on stairs: The cliff properties (Heven, Villa Aikia, Kal-Mar) look deceptively close on the map, but getting up there involves up to 200 stairs from the beach. If you want to limit steps, factor that in before booking.

The Spotlight: Villa Aikia – If You Want Something Special

Upscale, serene, quietly luxurious. Gay-owned, adults-only, and proudly so.

Perched on a hill at the northern edge of Zipolite, Villa Aikia is the kind of place you book when you want to treat yourself. We spoke with the owner personally and they shared gorgeous photos. It's a gay-owned boutique hotel with 18 ocean-view suites, a stunning infinity pool overlooking the sea, and a restaurant serving Italian, Mexican, and seafood.

Highlights

  • The view: Every suite faces the ocean. Sunsets from your private terrace? Yes indeed.
  • The pool: Infinity edge, overlooking the beach. No fighting for lounge chairs.
  • The privacy: Far enough from the main strip to feel like a true escape, but close enough to walk down for dinner or parties.
  • Adults-only: No kids. Just queer travelers, couples, and friends enjoying the freedom.

Our Take

We didn't stay here, as we were on a budget and wanted the local experience. But we walked past it many times, talked to guests, and peered over the edge. If we had the money? We'd book it. It's the nicest gay-owned option in town, and the owners clearly care.

Best for: Couples, luxury seekers, anyone celebrating a special occasion.

Skip if: Budget travelers, people who want to be in the middle of the action (it's a 10-15 minute walk to the main beach).

Where We Actually Stayed: Sebastián de los Milagros

Queer-owned, beachfront, magical, and proudly authentic.

This is where we based ourselves for most of our three weeks. Sebastián de los Milagros isn't a secret, it's a beloved institution in Zipolite... and for good reason. The website calls it "un rincón donde la serendipia, la magia, y la libertad convergen" (a corner where serendipity, magic, and freedom converge). They pretty much hit the nail on the head there.

Highlights

  • The location: It's directly on the beach. You walk out of your room and your toes touch sand in seconds. Playa del Amor is a short walk south.

  • The amenities: This isn't a bare-bones spot. It has a pool (which overlooks the ocean), a bar, and a restaurant. We spent lazy afternoons by the pool and had some of our favorite meals right there.

  • The crowd: It's a safe space by and for the community. The energy is welcoming, relaxed, and unapologetically queer. You'll see gay men, lesbians, trans travelers, and allies all sharing the space without a second thought. On weekends, some popular DJs come around and play some sunset sets, bringing in an even better crowd.

  • The authenticity: It's not a corporate resort. It's run by people who live there and care deeply about the experience. You feel that the moment you arrive.

Our Take

Best for: LGBTQ+ travelers who want a beautiful, safe, beachfront home base with a pool, good food, and a social but not overwhelming atmosphere.

Skip if: Anyone looking for a massive, anonymous resort experience. This is intimate and personal.

Best for Pool Parties & Drag Brunch: Men Zipolite

Social, sexy, and unapologetically gay. This is where the afternoon action is.

Men Zipolite is in the south side, close to where we stayed. We never slept here, but we went to their Friday pool parties and Sunday drag brunch maybe a few more times than we'd like to admit. There is a lot of energy, the crowd is almost entirely gay men, and the drinks flow freely.

Highlights

  • The pool parties: Friday afternoons. Naked or clothed, your choice. The queens perform, the music plays, and everyone has a great time.
  • The drag brunch: Sundays. Food, drinks, and fabulous performances, with the pool playing a major role in the drag queens' show.
  • On-site restaurant: Cochon Rose serves solid food (we ate there once, it was good).

Our Take

We stumbled into Men's Drag Brunch pool party on Sunday, and ended up staying for hours. The vibe is welcoming and very fun. The rooms are basic but clean... this isn't a luxury hotel, it's a party hotel.

Best for: Gay men who want to be where the action is. You'll make friends fast.

Skip if: Anyone who wants quiet, privacy, or luxury.

Yes, the drag queens love a good swim at the Sunday pool party.

Best for Upscale Spa Vibes: El Alquimista

The most established luxury option in Zipolite. Think spa treatments, oceanfront suites, and a restaurant that's famous across the coast.

El Alquimista has been here for decades, and it shows. The service is polished, the rooms are beauties, and the spa is genuinely excellent. It's on the north side, like Villa Aikia and Naked, with direct beach access.

Highlights

  • The spa and yoga: Massages, temazcal (traditional Mexican sweat lodge), wellness treatments, and yoga classes. We took a class here ourselves.
  • The restaurant: The best in Zipolite and the most romantic setting at night. You don't need to stay here to eat here.
  • The pool: A walk up the hill from the beach, but genuinely beautiful with great views.
  • The suites: Private terraces, ocean views, hammocks.

Our Take

We walked past El Alquimista many times on our way to the beach, had cocktails at the beach bar, and took a yoga class there. It's beautiful. But it's also the most expensive hotel on this list. If you have the budget and want to be pampered, this is your place. One quirk worth knowing: the beach in front is clothing-optional, but the pool (which is up the hill) is technically clothed. In practice, people skinny dip in the evenings.

Best for: Spa lovers, honeymooners, anyone celebrating a milestone.

Skip if: Budget travelers or anyone who wants a "real" Zipolite experience (it feels more like a resort bubble).

Best for Beachfront & Party Energy: Naked Zipolite

Social, beachfront, eco-friendly, and famously fun.

Naked is exactly what it sounds like... a clothing-optional beachfront hotel that leans into the freedom of Zipolite being the only official nude beach in Mexico. It's one of the north-side resorts, perched on the rocks with direct beach access and like the others up here, stunning views.

Highlights

  • Location: You can roll out of bed and onto the sand.
  • The pool and showers: Both genuinely impressive. The showers get rave reviews from regulars.
  • Day pass option: Not staying here? You can pay a $30 day pass to use the pool, showers, and beach. Worth it.
  • The parties: DJs play daily. The vibe is social without being overwhelming.
  • Eco-conscious: Solar panels, composting, water conservation. Feel good about your stay.

Our Take

We didn't sleep here, but we hung out at their beach bar a few times (yes, we hung out at a lot of beach bars). The crowd is mixed—gay, straight, families, solo travelers... but the energy is welcoming. Drinks are pricey (it's a resort), but the people-watching is excellent.

Best for: Social travelers who want beachfront access and don't mind paying extra for the view.

Skip if: Anyone who wants quiet seclusion (the music carries).

Best for Hardcore Nudists: Casa Nudista

Mandatory nudity. Social. Community-focused.

Casa Nudista is not messing around. You leave your clothes at the door. It's a mandatory-nudist property built around a central courtyard, with a pool, bar, lounge area, and Saturday parties. We went to one of their afternoon pool parties, and it's exactly what you'd expect. Relaxed, welcoming, and very naked.

Highlights

  • Mandatory nudity: If you're uncomfortable being naked, this isn't for you. If you love it, welcome home.
  • The courtyard: The whole property is organized around a central courtyard with the pool at its heart. Easy to end up talking to everyone by day two.
  • Accommodation range: Options go from bunk beds with shared bathrooms to proper private rooms. One of the more affordable nudist options on this list.
  • The pool parties: Saturday afternoons. Beer included with entry.
  • The community: You'll meet people here. It's designed for socializing.

Our Take

We went to a pool party here, and it was definitely a tight squeeze in the pool. Fun, but not our favorite. However, the property is gorgeous and very private.

Best for: Hardcore nudists, social butterflies, anyone who wants to fully embrace Zipolite's clothing-optional culture.

Skip if: Anyone who wants to keep their clothes on.

Best for Private Villas: HEVEN Residence

Secluded, luxurious, clothing-optional. For people who want privacy above all else.

Heven Residence is also at the north end of the beach. It's a collection of private villas with personal pools, terraces, and full kitchens. It's LGBT-owned, clothing-optional, and very, very quiet.

Highlights

  • Complete privacy: You won't see your neighbors unless you want to.
  • The pool: Lush, terraced gardens with a waterfall pool and romantic architecture. Not a standard resort setup.
  • Breakfast included: One of the few properties on this list that does this.
  • Kitchen: Cook your own meals or hire a private chef.
  • No A/C: You won't need it. The ocean breeze at this elevation handles everything.

Our Take

We walked past Heven a few times. It's stunning. But it's also one of the most expensive option on this list... by a lot. This is for people who want to escape, not party.

Best for: Couples on a romantic getaway, celebrities (or wannabe celebrities), anyone who wants to be left completely alone.

Skip if: Solo travelers, budget travelers, or anyone who wants to be social.

Best for Design Lovers: El Guayacán

Intimate, design-focused, adults-only. Three casitas and two rooms, all unique.

El Guayacán is a hidden gem on the hillside, a short walk from the beach. It's adults-only, clothing-optional, and each room is designed differently. The infinity pool has stunning ocean views.

Highlights

  • Design: Each room is unique. No two stays are the same.
  • Intimacy: Only five rooms. You'll know everyone by the end of your stay.
  • The pool: Small but beautiful, overlooking the ocean.

Our Take

We didn't go inside, but we heard rave reviews from other travelers. It's a favorite among gay couples who want something quiet, beautiful, and not crowded.

Best for: Design lovers, couples, people who want a quiet, beautiful escape.

Skip if: Party people, budget travelers.

Also Worth Mentioning

Casa Mixteca

Casa Mixteca: Artistic, cozy rooms with lush gardens. A short walk to the beach. Cheap, cheerful, and full of character. Clothed-only property.

Best for: Budget travelers and art lovers who want charm and a local feel without the resort price tag.

Skip if: Anyone who wants pool parties or beachfront access.

Hotel Playa Zipolite

Hotel Playa Zipolite: Sitting right at Roca Blanca (the corner of the tourist zone, ATM out front), this place has more going on than the price suggests. Every room has A/C and a refrigerator. There's a pool. The shaded lounge chairs go directly onto the sand with no restaurant blocking the way, which is rarer than you'd think in Zipolite. The excellent Black Mamba next door sends a waiter over to take your order at the beach. They also recently installed a whole-hotel backup generator, which matters here (power cuts in Zipolite are common).

Best for: Solo travelers and budget backpackers who want central location, real amenities, and zero fuss.

Skip if: Anyone chasing pool parties or a full resort energy.

Cocos Hotel

Right near Playa del Amor, Cocos sits in the woods next to a small stream. That makes it shaded and secluded, and it's one of the few options at that end of the beach. The catch: the stream means mosquitoes. Friends of ours stayed and liked it (it has wonderful ratings). We never made it inside ourselves.

Best for: Budget travelers who want to be as close to Playa del Amor as possible.

Skip if: Anyone sensitive to insects or wanting direct beachfront access.
